Ingredients
For the Skillet
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- 1 lb ground chicken
- 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated (or 1 tsp ground ginger)
- 3 cups broccoli florets, chopped small
Seasonings
- 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp paprika
Firecracker Sauce
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 cup buffalo sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
To Serve (Optional but Recommended)
- Cooked white rice or brown rice
- Sliced green onions
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Make the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, buffalo sauce, honey, and rice vinegar until well combined. Set aside to allow flavors to meld.
- Cook the chicken: Heat avocado oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken and chopped onion. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking up the meat with a spatula, until the chicken is browned and cooked through.
- Add flavor + broccoli: Stir in the minced garlic and grated ginger and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add the chopped broccoli, then season with salt, black pepper, and paprika, stirring to combine.
- Sauce it up: Pour the prepared firecracker sauce over the skillet ingredients. Stir well to coat everything evenly. Reduce heat slightly and simmer for 3–5 minutes, until the broccoli is tender-crisp and the sauce has thickened to a glossy coating.
- Finish + serve: Spoon the firecracker chicken and broccoli mixture over cooked white or brown rice. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for added flavor and crunch.
Notes
- Less spicy: Use mild buffalo sauce or reduce buffalo sauce to 3 tablespoons and add 1 extra tablespoon honey to balance the heat.
- More spicy: Add red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce to increase the heat level.
- Broccoli tip: For softer broccoli, add 2–3 tablespoons of water, cover the skillet for 2 minutes, then uncover and simmer to thicken the sauce.
- Meal prep: This dish stores well for 3–4 days in the fridge. Reheat gently with a splash of water to keep it moist.
