Description

This 20 Minute Garlic Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein features tender flank steak, crisp broccoli, shredded carrots, and noodles tossed in a flavorful sauce made with soy sauce, hoisin, and garlic. A quick and satisfying stir-fry style dish that’s perfect for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Vegetables and Protein

  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 8 ounce flank steak, sliced against the grain
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium carrot, shredded
  • Green onion for garnish

Pasta

  • 8 ounces lo mein noodles or spaghetti noodles

Sauces and Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook noodles and broccoli: In a large pot of boiling water, cook the noodles according to package directions. Add the broccoli florets during the last 5 minutes of cooking and let them cook together until the broccoli is tender. Drain the noodles and broccoli thoroughly.
  2. Prepare the steak: Slice the flank steak across the grain into 1/4 inch strips to ensure tenderness.
  3. Sauté the beef: While the pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced steak and cook until it is no longer pink, about 3-5 minutes depending on heat and thickness.
  4. Add aromatics and vegetables: Add the minced garlic and shredded carrots to the skillet with the steak. Cook for an additional minute until fragrant and the carrots start to soften.
  5. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, reduced-sodium soy sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, ground ginger, crushed red pepper flakes, and pepper until well combined.
  6. Toss noodles with sauce: Add the drained noodles and broccoli to the skillet with the beef and vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over the top and toss everything together until the noodles and ingredients are evenly coated and heated through.
  7. Garnish and serve: Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately for best taste and texture.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute beef with firm tofu or mushrooms and use vegetarian hoisin sauce.
  • Use low-sodium soy sauce to control salt content.
  • Lo mein noodles can be replaced with spaghetti or other Asian-style noodles based on availability.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, increase crushed red pepper flakes to taste.
