Ingredients
Filling
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup chopped red or green bell pepper
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 cup Louisiana crawfish tails, drained and rinsed
- 1/3 cup chopped green onion
- 3 tablespoons reduced-fat cream cheese
Dough
- 2 cans reduced-fat crescent rolls (8 ounces each)
Mardi Gras Topping
- 6 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
- Yellow food coloring
- Green food coloring
- Red and blue food coloring (to mix for purple)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 10-inch round pizza pan with foil and coat it lightly with nonstick cooking spray to ensure easy removal of the king cake later.
- Sauté Vegetables and Prepare Filling: Heat a nonstick skillet sprayed with cooking spray over medium heat. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic, sautéing until they soften and release their aromas. Stir in the crawfish tails, chopped green onion, and cream cheese until the mixture becomes creamy and evenly blended. Remove from heat.
- Arrange Crescent Dough: Separate the crescent rolls into 16 triangles along the perforations. Arrange these slices around the prepared pan in a ring with pointed ends facing the center. Press the seams down about halfway from the points to form a continuous dough ring.
- Add Filling and Shape Cake: Evenly spread the crawfish mixture over the sealed seams of the dough ring. Fold the pointed dough ends over the filling, then tuck the bottom part of each triangle over the top, creating a circular king cake shape similar to traditional versions.
- Bake the King Cake: Place the assembled cake in the oven and bake for 20–25 minutes until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
- Prepare Mardi Gras Topping: While the cake bakes, divide the grated Parmesan cheese into three small bowls. Add yellow food coloring to one, green to the second, and combine red and blue food coloring in the third to create purple cheese.
- Add Colored Cheese and Final Bake: After the king cake finishes baking, remove it from the oven and sprinkle the colored Parmesan cheeses over the top in festive patches. Return to the oven for 1–2 minutes just until the cheese melts slightly and adheres to the cake.
- Cool and Serve: Let the king cake cool slightly before slicing into 14 servings. Serve warm as an appetizer or light main dish at Mardi Gras celebrations or gatherings.
Notes
- Use thawed and well-drained frozen crawfish tails if fresh are unavailable.
- Substitute shrimp or crab meat for crawfish if needed.
- For a spicier version, add Cajun seasoning, hot sauce, or chopped jalapeños to the filling.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat leftovers in a 350°F oven for 8–10 minutes to restore crispness; avoid prolonged microwaving to prevent soggy dough.
- Gluten-free crescent roll dough can be used as a substitute for a gluten-free version.
- Additional vegetables like celery or extra bell peppers can be added for extra flavor and texture.
- The colored Parmesan represents Mardi Gras traditional colors: purple, green, and gold (yellow).
