Description
Puerto Rican Quesitos are flaky puff pastry pastries filled with sweetened cream cheese and glazed with honey or syrup for a glossy finish. They’re a beloved treat often enjoyed for breakfast or dessert across Puerto Rico.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp honey or simple syrup (for glazing)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
- Cut each puff pastry sheet into rectangles or squares, depending on your preferred size.
- Place a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each piece of pastry.
- Fold the pastry over the filling into a roll or triangle shape and seal the edges by pressing gently.
- Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Arrange the pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
- Remove from the oven and brush with honey or simple syrup while still warm for a shiny glaze.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a classic twist, add guava paste to the filling.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.
- Reheat in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 5–7 minutes to crisp up again.
- Avoid microwaving as it makes the pastry soggy.
