Description

This one-skillet kielbasa and cabbage recipe is a quick, easy, and flavorful dish that combines savory kielbasa with tender sautéed cabbage and onions, seasoned with paprika for a satisfying meal perfect for any day of the week.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 14 ounces kielbasa sliced into ½-inch-thick pieces

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1 cup finely chopped white onion (approximately 1 medium white onion)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons minced garlic (approximately 3 large cloves)
  • 8 cups thinly sliced green cabbage (approximately 1 medium head)

Oils & Seasonings

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil or vegetable oil, plus more as needed
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly cracked black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: Place a large skillet on the stovetop over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon avocado oil and heat until the oil is hot and shimmery.
  2. Sauté the kielbasa: Add the sliced kielbasa to the hot skillet. Cook, flipping pieces occasionally, until they are lightly browned on all sides, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove and transfer to a plate.
  3. Sauté the onion: If needed, add 1 tablespoon more oil to the skillet and let it heat until shimmery. Add the finely chopped white onion and stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, approximately 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for 30 to 60 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Cook the cabbage: Add the thinly sliced green cabbage to the skillet and stir well to combine with onions and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, for 10 to 12 minutes or until the cabbage has wilted and the onions have darkened slightly.
  6. Season with paprika: Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of paprika over the cabbage mixture and stir until evenly distributed.
  7. Return kielbasa to skillet: Add the browned kielbasa back into the skillet and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until hot throughout.
  8. Season to taste: Add salt and freshly cracked black pepper to your preference and stir well.
  9. Serve: Divide the kielbasa and cabbage into portions and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Cabbage: For best results, refer to my guide on How to Shred Cabbage (3 Ways) to prepare the cabbage efficiently.
  • Leftovers: Allow the dish to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat for best texture and flavor.
