Description

Herb & Garlic Swirl Rolls are soft, fluffy, and bursting with the fresh flavors of garlic and herbs. These rolls make a perfect side dish or a savory snack, served warm right out of the oven with butter or your favorite dip. The aromatic garlic and fresh parsley and basil make these a delightful, savory treat for any meal.

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Filling Ingredients

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare Dough Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Prepare Filling: In a small saucepan, melt the softened butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic, parsley, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir until fragrant, then remove from heat and set aside.
  6. Roll Dough: Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
  7. Fill and Roll: Spread the garlic-herb butter mixture evenly over the dough. Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log.
  8. Slice Rolls: Cut the rolled dough into 12 equal slices and arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
  9. Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes, until they are golden brown.
  11. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let the rolls cool slightly before serving warm with butter or dip.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the filling before rolling the dough.
  • These rolls can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days but are best enjoyed fresh and warm.
  • Make sure the milk is not too hot when activating the yeast, as temperatures above 120°F can kill the yeast.
  • If you don’t have fresh herbs, dried herbs can be used, but reduce the quantity to about 1 tablespoon each.
