Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
Filling Ingredients
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- ¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- ¼ cup fresh basil, finely chopped
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Prepare Dough Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Prepare Filling: In a small saucepan, melt the softened butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic, parsley, basil, salt, and pepper. Stir until fragrant, then remove from heat and set aside.
- Roll Dough: Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
- Fill and Roll: Spread the garlic-herb butter mixture evenly over the dough. Starting from one edge, roll the dough tightly into a log.
- Slice Rolls: Cut the rolled dough into 12 equal slices and arrange them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
- Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes, until they are golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let the rolls cool slightly before serving warm with butter or dip.
Notes
- For extra flavor, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the filling before rolling the dough.
- These rolls can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days but are best enjoyed fresh and warm.
- Make sure the milk is not too hot when activating the yeast, as temperatures above 120°F can kill the yeast.
- If you don’t have fresh herbs, dried herbs can be used, but reduce the quantity to about 1 tablespoon each.
