Ingredients
Meats
- 4 strips smoked turkey strips
- 1 pound kielbasa
Vegetables & Aromatics
- 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 small head green cabbage, cored and roughly chopped
Pantry & Spices
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup low sodium chicken broth
Instructions
- Prep Ingredients: Cut the smoked turkey strips into small pieces, slice the kielbasa, finely chop the onion, mince the garlic, and core and roughly chop the cabbage to have all ingredients ready.
- Brown Smoked Turkey: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the smoked turkey pieces. Cook until nicely browned, then remove and set aside.
- Brown Kielbasa: Add vegetable oil to the same skillet, then add the kielbasa slices. Cook for about 5 minutes until browned, then remove and set aside with the turkey.
- Sauté Aromatics and Cabbage: Reduce heat to medium and add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add the cabbage and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add Spices and Tomato Paste: Stir in salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, ground cumin, and tomato paste, ensuring the cabbage is well coated with the seasoning.
- Simmer with Broth: Pour in the chicken broth, cover the skillet, reduce heat to low, and let simmer for 15 minutes until the cabbage is tender but still slightly crisp.
- Combine Meats and Finish Cooking: Uncover the skillet, return the browned kielbasa and smoked turkey pieces to the pan, stir everything together, and cook uncovered for another 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Serve: Serve warm immediately for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute kielbasa with any smoked sausage for a different flavor.
- Add diced bell peppers or carrots for extra vegetables and color.
- For heat, add a pinch of chili flakes during the spice step.
- Cook longer to allow the cabbage to caramelize more for a richer taste.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Reheat using a skillet over medium heat or in the microwave in short intervals, stirring between.
- Red cabbage can be used, but it changes color and taste slightly.
- Plant-based sausages can be substituted for a vegetarian version.
- Adding diced potatoes requires separate cooking or extra skillet time.
