  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

Churros

  • 1 cup flour, plain / all purpose
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable, canola or olive oil (not extra virgin olive oil)
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups+ vegetable or canola oil, for frying

Chocolate Sauce

  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup thickened / heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Cinnamon sugar coating: Combine sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl, set aside.
  2. Batter: Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Add oil and water, mix until just combined to form a thick, gummy batter.
  3. Piping bag: Transfer dough into a piping bag with a star tip nozzle. Set aside while oil heats.
  4. Heat oil: Heat oil in a pot to 170°C/340°F.
  5. Pipe & snip: Pipe dough into oil, snip with scissors to desired length.
  6. Cook: Fry until golden and crisp.
  7. Drain: Remove churros, drain on paper towels, then roll in cinnamon sugar.
  8. Chocolate Sauce: Melt chocolate and cream together, stir until smooth. Serve with churros.

Notes

  • Makes about 12 x 15cm/6″ long churros or 20 shorter ones.
  • Make sure to use plain flour, not self-raising flour.
  • For the chocolate, use chocolate meant for cooking.
  • For deep frying, use a pot, wok, or deep skillet with enough oil.
  • Churros can be made ahead and reheated in the oven.
