Ingredients
Meat and Vegetables
- 2 lbs ground beef, or ground turkey
- 1 large yellow onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Tomato Base
- 2 (15 oz) cans diced tomatoes, do not drain
- 2 (15 oz) cans tomato sauce
- 1 (15 oz) can red kidney beans, rinsed and drained (optional)
Seasonings and Broth
- 1 ½ tablespoons Italian seasoning
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 cups beef broth, or half water and half broth
Pasta and Cheese
- 16 oz large elbow noodles (can use up to 24 oz pasta)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Garnish
- Fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Brown the Beef: In a large pot over medium-high heat, thoroughly brown the ground beef, breaking it apart into crumbles as it cooks. Drain off excess grease if there is a lot of it before continuing.
- Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the browned beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are tender, about 5 minutes.
- Add Tomato Base and Seasonings: Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with their juice), and optionally the rinsed and drained red kidney beans. Add Italian seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, and black pepper. Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Simmer the Sauce: Let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to blend the flavors.
- Cook the Pasta: Add the elbow noodles to the simmering sauce. Continue to simmer for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is al dente. Avoid overcooking as the noodles will absorb more broth after removal from heat.
- Add Cheese and Serve: Remove the pot from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and well combined. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
- Store: Transfer cooled leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
- Reheat: Warm leftovers on the stovetop over medium heat or in the microwave in 30-second intervals, adding a splash of water or broth if needed to loosen the sauce.
