Description

Enjoy a homemade twist on a classic fast-food favorite with these Big Mac Sloppy Joes. This one-pan recipe combines lean ground beef, diced onions, and a savory Thousand Island Dressing to mimic the iconic burger flavor. Topped with melted cheese, shredded lettuce, and pickles on sesame seed buns, these sandwiches make for a delicious and easy weeknight meal that saves you a trip to the drive-thru.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • ⅓ cup Thousand Island Dressing
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 8 cheese slices
  • 8 sesame seed buns
  • Shredded lettuce, extra dressing, and sliced pickles for topping

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef and onions: In a large non-stick skillet, combine the ground beef and diced yellow onion. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the beef is fully browned and the onions are softened. Drain any excess grease from the pan to keep the dish from becoming oily.
  2. Add seasoning and dressing: Stir in the Thousand Island Dressing, salt, and black pepper thoroughly into the meat mixture to combine all the flavors evenly.
  3. Prepare the thickening agent: In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with the beef broth until smooth. This mixture will be used to thicken the meat sauce.
  4. Thicken the sauce: Pour the cornstarch and beef broth mixture into the skillet with the meat over medium-high heat. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens and clings nicely to the beef.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches: Place one slice of cheese on the bottom half of a sesame seed bun, then spoon a portion of the meat mixture over the cheese. Add the bottom half of a second bun on top of the meat, spoon more meat mixture on top of the second bun, and add another slice of cheese.
  6. Add toppings and finish: Top with shredded lettuce, sliced pickles, and more Thousand Island Dressing as desired. Finish by placing the top half of the bun to complete the sandwich. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease and make the dish healthier.
  • You can substitute Thousand Island Dressing with Russian dressing for a slightly different flavor.
  • Adjust the salt and pepper levels to your taste preference.
  • For extra cheesiness, consider adding a cheese slice on top of the meat mixture before placing the lettuce and pickles.
  • This recipe works great as a quick weeknight dinner and pairs well with fries or a fresh salad.
