Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 1 pound ground meat (beef or turkey)
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage (sweet and hot mix)
  • 1 small red pepper, finely diced
  • 1 small green pepper, finely diced
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 8 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 28oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 25oz jar pasta sauce
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons basil, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

For the Pasta Mixture:

  • 1 16-ounce box ziti pasta
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped basil
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded and divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

    Cook the ziti pasta until al dente, then set aside.

  2. In a skillet, cook the Italian sausage and ground beef with peppers, onions, and garlic.
  3. Add tomatoes, pasta sauce, Parmesan, cream, basil, sugar, seasonings, and simmer.
  4. In a bowl, mix ziti, ricotta, mozzarella, basil, and seasonings with some meat sauce.
  5. Layer meat sauce, ziti mixture, and cheese in a baking dish.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 30-45 minutes, then broil for a golden top.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving.
